Humility-part 2 (How can we keep humble?)

If there is one thing that I believe every single person has a challenge with in this world, it is staying humble. After reading such a statement, one may argue that they have mastered the “art” of being humble and that they do not see themselves being proud in any way. I would respond, it is one thing to be humble but I believe it is another staying humble.

Pride is most evident in those who do not believe in Christ. Living a life apart from Christ clearly shows how they believe the lie that they can make it on their own terms instead of God’s terms. Basically what the person (who has not placed their faith in Christ) is saying is that God’s plan of reconciling man to Himself through His Son Jesus is inadequate and that they would rather prefer to remain living a life where they are at enmity with God. This is dangerous state to be in.

One who has come to believe on Christ and His saving work at the cross may breathe a sigh of relief at this point but another expression of pride can creep in even in the believer. Last time I spoke of how a prayerless life in Christ is an expression of pride. This time I would like to focus on how it can also be expressed in one neglecting the reading of God’s word.

Dr Josh Mack has written an article entitled Desire, Discipline and the Study of God’s Word which I believe highlights the importance of the disciplined study of God’s word. I highly recommend it for anyone who may be struggling with disciplining themselves or who may know someone who may be struggling in this essential discipline. Please follow the link at the end of the page to view the article.

Just as eating is a requirement essential for one’s existence so the reading of the word of God is crucial for one’s spiritual sustenance. One gets to grow in their understanding of the gospel through the reading of God’s word. It is through a constant reminder of how you have been forgiven by God through Christ that you appreciate the value of forgiving others and it is in seeing how God shows His love to undeserving man that you also learn to show love to others irreggardless of their response.  Intentional frequent reminders of the gospel through the continuous reading of God’s word will help you in staying humble.
